Straw bale houses

There are a lot of cool concepts, but to build with straw bales is the most fascinating for me. It combines 5 principles that are extreme important for me:

  • Passive: we use complete straw bales (abound 36cm wide) to insulate our houses. This thickness nearly by the way respects most ambitious energy efficiency requirements

  • Eco-friendly: basically, straw is only a side-product in an agricultural wheat production. And before it is used as litter, we use it an additional time as an insulation material in the construction sector.

  • Healthy: With a thick plaster of clay, straw bale houses are probably the most comfortable houses one can imagine. Surfaces in clay regulate humidity and absorbs harmful substances and have absolutely nothing in common with the current practice.

  • Deconstructable: Following generations have to solve the problems we left with our current construction methods. These houses can completely be built back and allow us to separate the used materials one by one.

  • Affordable: Or we build just the timber structure with the waterproof envelope and the new houseowner insulates himself with the straw bales and plasters himself with clay, or we take care of the integral project.
